Well, I've done it. I'm building an airplane. It is a Van's Aircraft RV-7 experimental. And who said dreams don't come true? Since starting in July 2006, people that find out what I'm doing usually respond with "You're building a what and where? What happened, did you just wake up one morning and decide to build an airplane.... in your garage?". Yep. that's pretty much it. You will find that answer realtively common among kit aircraft builders, RV builders in particular. (Just ask Walter Tondou!)
Why? I'm one of those (many) guys who played with airplanes as a kid. Paper airplanes, balsa wood, styro-foam and later fly-by-line models with exceptional stunt capabilites. I flew right seat for three summers with a friend of mine back in Oklahoma. (Piper Cherokee Six). A nice aircraft, roomy and nice performance for its size and weight. I'd been a passenger from time to time growing up also over the years in single engine aircraft. (Including a trip once with the owner founder of Sonic Drive Inns). Needless to say I was smitten. So, it was time to "act" on the dream.
The Van's series of experimental kit aircraft (my choice RV-7 ) fit perfectly into my mission profiles and desireable accessibilities. I did not want "fractional" ownership. I wanted to fly when I wanted and was willing to pay a premium for it. Surprisingly, its really not a premium at all. Owning and operating an RV aircraft is very affordable.

Latest progress: 05/08/2008
Tonight I re-worked the throttle cable bracket ..... again! After I installed the exhaust there wasnt enough clearance between the heat shield attached to the exhaust and the fire sleeve I wrapped around the throttle cable. The solution was to make a new bracket and drill the cable hole 1/4 inch higher than the last iteration.
